6 Fundamental Principles of Pilates
- Breathing – We will teach you how to create full, deep breaths throughout each movement.
- Centering – Draw your attention to the core (powerhouse), the area between your lower ribs and hips and also includes the lower and upper back muscles.
- Concentration – Simply paying close attention to the specific details of every pilates exercise. Bring your full attention to the movements of each exercise in order to obtain maximum value.
- Control – Good posture can be successfully acquired only when the entire mechanism of the body is under control through movement.
- Flow – The intention that the energy one exerts during each exercise should connect all body parts smoothly and with even flow throughout the body.
- Precision – The final fundamental principle is precision of movement and step by step placement, alignment and trajectory for each moving part of the body.

Both machines;
Have cable pulleys for arm conditioning
Toe bar and platform for lower body training
Both feature a sliding base that uses body resistance and core recruitment to challenge and power the movements.
The primary difference;
Reformer sliding base (Referred to as a ‘carriage’ on wheels) moves back and forth within a frame. The resistance can be adjusted by the tension of the springs attached to the carriage on one end of the unit. The Gravity Machine has a tower that allows for 9 levels of incline. The sliding base is attached to the tower which creates the resistance through gravity. This allows challenge level to be adjusted through height as well, allowing for more angles to be used with movement patterns.
While both units focus on core engagement, the Gravity Machine allows for a variety of angles to help create more functional movement patterns to help each individual move with more confidence and strength.
